Meet Stylist Ken Stephens

Ken_Fresh_Salon_Charlotte_NC_177

Ken Stephens could have been in Show Biz!  The FRESH stylist spent his early years as a dancer, with an eye on making it a career someday.  But an injury in his teens sidelined Ken and got him moving in a new direction.

Hair!  Ken’s grandmother ran a salon and, inspired by her, Ken began doing what a lot of aspiring stylists do… he cut and colored his friends and family’s hair.  It’s why Ken thanks them to this day.  His mother and grandmother both encouraged Ken to follow his passion and pursue a career in the beauty business.

I thank my family and my employer for my success. My family for being so supportive and my employer for giving me the opportunity in this great salon,” he says.

A perfect day at the FRESH starts with a cup of coffee and a smile.  And if you know Ken, you realize that smile seldom leaves his face!  He loves to chat with co-workers about his day and collaborate about the latest styles that are trending in the industry.

“It keeps me energized, he says. My coworkers are supportive which makes for a great work environment.”

The trends Ken will follow into the New Year include fantasy hair and natural texture.  Both are popular. He says he loves textured hair because you can style it differently every day, and have a great, new look.

But it’s the people he works with and his clients he works for, that inspire Ken the most.

“I am a people person!  FRESH gives me the chance to meet and work with all kinds of interesting and inspiring people.  And I love learning about them,” he said.

Originally from Dallas, Texas, Ken came to Charlotte to be close to the people he loves who are also here now.  He has a special place in his heart for his nine-year-old nephew, his sister… and that grandmother and mother who gave him the green light years ago to follow his dreams!

Welcome to Charlotte Ken!  We are glad you’re part of the FRESH family!

What I Want for Christmas

christmas wish list

It’s that time of year so many of us make lists.  What we have to do.  What we need to accomplish.  What we want to buy.  How much we’re going to spend.  The Christmas wish list seems to take over.  That’s why it’s so meaningful to pause and read what our FRESH family wants this holiday season:

Kaia Sellitti’s wish list will make you laugh, cry and nod your head.  Kaia, thanks for sharing!

“I would like my kids to get along for a day, my foster dog to find a loving home, and to look as good as I did when I was 30.”

Adrena Thurmond’s list isn’t found in the mall or on Amazon:

“I want all the animals in need to be saved.”

Stylist Ken Stephens is a dreamer and a realist.  Check out his wish list.

“For Christmas I would like to see the world’s hostility calm down. I would also like the Dyson blow-dryer.”

What I Want for Christmas

Be Thankful!

It’s November.  A time we all stop and reflect about what really matters; what we’re thankful for; who we’re thankful for.  We asked around the salon.  What are you grateful for this Thanksgiving Holiday? It’s no surprise family, friends and clients top the lists!

From Tana Isenhour, our fabulous FRESH colorist:

“I am thankful for my family & friends that have supported me through my life’s journey to become a stylist. I’m also thankful for my Fresh family and the opportunity I’ve had to travel to New York for my education.”

Taylor Moore, another loved colorist:

“I am thankful for all of my clients. I enjoy seeing them at each and every appointment.  You all make it fun to come to work! I am also thankful for my beautiful daughter, Audrianna.”

And from Chelsea Briar, our Color assistant:

“I’m thankful for my family and animals! They make me laugh every day. I’m also thankful to be a part of the Fresh team! I’m thankful that the team has taken me in straight out of beauty school and taught me so much.  I’m not only thankful this Thanksgiving, but every day!”

Be Thankful!

Keep the Shine;  It’s Winter Time

Summer and Fall are over and now we’re gearing up for the holidays.  As you get ready to shine this season, we offer some tips on how to maintain healthy hair as temperatures drop.

Moisture:

One key to looking your best is keeping moisture in your hair and scalp.  During the upcoming months, consider shampooing less often.  Sound tough?  Try ARROJOs Dry Shampoo for hair that will look like you just washed!  Not only will you keep moisture locked in, but you’ll save time too!

Frizz:

Want to keep those winter frizzy flyways to a minimum?  First, give up the towel!  Don’t rub your wet hair with a towel, instead gently damp your hair and use a wide tooth wooden comb to get out the tangles.  We also recommend ARROJOs Frizz Control, the perfect product that will help your hair maintain smoothness, control and shine.

Go Mild

Switch up your shampoo.  Now is the time to try a mild shampoo and deep conditioner.  We love ARROJOs Gentle and Daily Shampoos.  Both are vitamin rich with clean scents.  They’re perfect for the winter months ahead.  Team up these products with conditioners that are kind to the hair because the ingredients are organic and natural.

Fresh in the Community

We’ve been part of the South Charlotte community for 8 years and we believe in giving back to the people and organizations who have helped make FRESH the number one salon in the area!

That’s why “Movies on the Green” was so important to us.  The movie event, hosted right on the Promenade’s park, is always packed with our customers, neighbors and friends.  This year, once again, Providence Spring Elementary celebrated school spirit night and guests could spin a wheel for prizes, gift cards and special offers.  Hundreds showed up for the fun!

FRESH donated a gift card for a haircut, a huge basket full of products and a duo including ARROJO shampoo and conditioner, plus other styling products from our signature lines.

But the most exciting FRESH contribution to this annual event was our complimentary color consultations and FREE hair braiding. Our stylists were on hand to give tips and suggestions on the latest color trends and we braided the hair of more than 80 lucky kids!!

Rooted Blondes

It’s fall and that means it’s time for a change.  We’re trading summer tanks for fall sweaters.  Moving on from walks on the beach to hikes in the mountains.  Switching up those margaritas for pumpkin lattes.

And with all those changes, it’s also a great time to try something new in hair color.  In the Fall, you’ll be hearing about  Rooted Blondes! And it’s a look you’ll love.  Gone are the days of hiding roots.  Blondes today are getting rid of that taboo and embracing this trend that mixes light and dark. What is a rooted blonde? It’s blending icy blonde with a deep and dark shadow root.

This is the craze for Fall 2017 and we think it will remain a hot trend well into the year.  Be the first to give it a try.  Think of Rooted Blondes as the Balayage of 2016!  Talk to your FRESH stylist to find out more!

Colorist: Christina Pearce

Christina Pearce can thank her parents for helping her begin her career as a Fresh Salon colorist.

She was only 11 when she began to “experiment” with those color concoctions we’ve all tried in our youth.  There was Kool-Aid, Lemon Juice, Peroxide and Cranberry Juice.  Yes, Cranberry Juice!

Christina is first to admit that she had many “mess ups,” but she always believed she was a Pro. After dying her own hair blue, it was Christina’s parents who suggested hair school.  Soon after, Christina was enrolled at Charlotte’s Aveda Institute.

“A perfect day at the salon is a full book of happy clients, some good conversations and a lot of laughs,” she says.

Christina’s favorite color trends are warm colors in the Fall, pastel trends in the Spring and deep jewel tones in the Winter.  Currently, Christina’s favorites might correspond with her favorite home décor obsessions:  Blush and Emerald.

When Christina has a moment to get her own hair done, she seeks out Fresh stylists who share her “lightbulb” moments  and seem to know exactly what she wants to do; what she’s looking for.

“Everyone at the salon is so amazing.  I have never worked with this much talent and when getting my own hair done, I have so many stylists and colorists to choose from.  Each of them brings their own vision and that’s what makes it so much fun,” she says.

Christina and her husband have three spoiled, tiny dogs and spend a lot of their free time renovating their 1960’s home.  Once it’s finally done…. Christina is planning a vacation!  Sounds good… although we all know that like hair, there’s always something new to do around the house.
